Poverty And Minimum Wage ( Temp Title ) - 1431 Words
Ethan Wilhm Professor Amy Click English Composition 1 11 October 2017 Poverty and minimum wage (temp title) Based on the poverty threshold, or the smallest annual salary required to live as determined by the government, more than forty million people in America live in poverty (ââ¬Å"UC Davis Center for Poverty Researchâ⬠). Thatââ¬â¢s forty million people who make less money than the bare minimum required to support themselves or their family. Of those forty million, nineteen and a half million make less than fifty percent of the bare minimum they need to support themselves (ââ¬Å"UC Davis Center for Poverty Researchâ⬠). The only reason many of these people or families can support a stable life is thanks to many government welfare programs. Worst yet isâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The only changes made to this value have been to adjust for inflation (ââ¬Å"What is the Current Poverty Rate in the United Statesâ⬠), additionally this value is, for the most part, left unchanged when applied to families from other states (ââ¬Å"What are poverty thresholds and poverty guidelinesâ⬠). These large generalizations result in multiple factors and their impact on a family budget being insufficiently covered. Factors such as the differing cost of housing, food, and services between the states, modern technologyââ¬â¢s growing presence in the workplace, car payments, and more are not adequately expressed in the poverty threshold. This ultimately ends with a troubling misinterpretation of the minimum income needed to survive in a modern environment. Supporting yourself or your family off minimum wage pay is exceedingly difficult. Modern day expenses are too much to support off minimum wage, and people will inevitably start to cut back certain expenses which could end up hurting them later. Created by Amy K. Glasimeier, a professor of economic geography and regional planning at MIT, in 2004; the living wage calculator calculates a living wage value which represents the minimum hourly wage a family unit needs to supp ort a bare minimum life style (ââ¬Å"The Living Wage Calculatorâ⬠). In the book, Hand to Mouth: Living in Bootstrap America by Linda Tirado, Tirado talks about temp work. According to her temp work is worse off than the minimum wage. Temp work is when companies help save money, they would hire temp workers for years. They do it because it is cheaper than hiring labor directly, and they have the right to do so. The main point of a temp worker is supposed to get a permanent job status, but when they are hired by such companies after they are unemployedRead MoreFundamentals of Hrm263904 Words à |à 1056 PagesAbsolute and Relative Standards 248 DID YOU KNOW?: The ââ¬Å"Anywhereâ⬠Performance Appraisal 248 Provide Ongoing Feedback 249 Use Multiple Raters 249 Use Peer Evaluations 249 360-Degree Appraisals 250 xii Contents Compensation Surveys 270 Wage Curves 270 The Wage Structure 271 WORKPLACE ISSUES: Team Performance Appraisals 250 Rate Selectively 251 Train Appraisers 251 The Performance Appraisal Meeting 251 International Performance Appraisal 253 Who Performs the Evaluation? 253 Evaluation FormatsRead MoreThe Ethiopian Financial Sector Reform29124 Words à |à 117 Pagesdata and information which I used in this thesis.
